My problem is that when I position my div at the absolute location of the mouse, it is being offset by the containing div's offset. How can I claim compensation? Fixed The fixed value is similar to absolute as it can help you position an element anywhere relative to the document, however this value is unaffected by scrolling. Position Absolute Top Not Working In other browsers when the parent (#whitebox) has z-index:auto then you can make the child (including its background) appear underneath using z-index:-1 as Tommy mentioned.
