It's hard to tell what is causing the problem without testing the laptop with another working display. I don’t have reinstallation discs for Vista and I see I can order them from HP, but would they work if my computer doesn’t recognize my “C” drive I would test Disconnecting those cables shouldn't damage the laptop.
