everytime i try to plug it in i get the message "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. You may also... If the power adapters are the same (carefully read all the specs posted on the adapter), try swapping out the adapter and see if it works on your Inspiron 1420. Wiggle the connector with the AC adapter removed to see if it appears loose in the laptop.

As for your suggestion, I took out the battery and did as you said and it in fact does run on the power supply alone. The system will continue to power on after pressing the key, but the error message is repeated every time the system is turned on. Feel lucky it did not damage your laptop.
